Adolescent Counselling

Adolescence: It is the stage when we make the transition from child to adult, this usually occurs between 10 and 19. This is a time during which a great deal of both physical and mental changes take place, the physical changes often referred to as puberty. These changes may predispose adolescents to be sensitive, to experience mood swings and to have swings in confidence levels. For this reason, we parents should ensure that we take into account this period of vulnerability which require support and understanding.

Adolescents often find themselves in various emotional difficulties such as,

  • Not being understood by their parents and teachers, persistent feelings of hopelessness
  • Having difficulty focusing, lacking self-confidence and finding themselves at odds with their parents, teachers and peers
  • Self-destructive behaviors- talking about thoughts of self-harm, having lost their will to live
  • Significant changes in eating habits
  • Changes in their behavior, isolating themselves, not knowing what they want and where they belong, feeling sad, depressed, angry or anxious
  • Feeling rejected by the society, alienated, lonely or disliked by others
  • Extreme mood swings with motivation and study problems, an abrupt drop in grades with learning difficulties and disabilities

Teenagers often find their independence by making friends and widening their social circle. As they begin to carve out an identity, they become more susceptible to their friend’s influences and fall into bad company. Unfortunately study shows that about 4 in 10 teenagers become seriously depressed each year.

We help adolescents relieve distressing mental health symptoms by exploring their feelings, understand their behaviors and develop resilience, ultimately promoting mental and emotional well-being and thereby helping them feel better.

  • Building emotional regulation: Support adolescents by providing guidance, emotional support and coping strategies to manage the challenges of adolescence.
  • Healing from trauma: Our counsellors work collaboratively with adolescents to identify and understand their unique stressors, whether related to academic pressures, family dynamics or social relationships. Help teens explore their feelings, understand their behaviors, and develop resilience.
  • Growing self-worth and self-compassion: Teenagers develop and improve their skills in areas like emotional control, effective communication, assertiveness, empathy and self-awareness, which ultimately promote mental and emotional well-being.
  • Repairing family relationships: Child and adolescent counselling is beneficial to both the child and their family members. It can restore ruptures between parents and children. These ruptures might be the result of early childhood trauma or may have developed during the teen years while the adolescent was struggling with mental health issues.
  • Gaining healthy coping skills: If they learn to handle anxiety and deal with their emotional well-being, it improves their confidence. They gain positive coping skills too.
  • Better academic performance: As mental health issues are addressed, teenagers are motivated which aids them in getting their priorities. When they have got a better awareness of who they are and what drives them, they are able to attain academic success based on internal motivation rather than numerous distractions.
